TRUE RELIGION VERSUS JUDAISM

Printable View
Scripture Reading: Acts 15
Date: May 12, 2012 or upcoming Sabbath
Memory Verse:
Acts 15:5But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

Summary: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Joh 4:24

Introduction: Acts 15 makes a bold statement that puts a difference between the Church of God and the religion of the Jews. What is that difference?

1. Should there be different beliefs for the Gentiles and the Jews?   Ephesians 4:5
YHWH'S love is without partiality, He does not have nephews and Grandchildren; all who accepts His will for their lives, walking in the truth of His word are called children, wither you are Jew or gentile the one LORD who is rich toward all, has one baptism into His faith.
Ephesians 4:5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

2. What is the relationship between the Gentiles and the Jews through this one belief?   Galatians 3:27, 28
When one comes to Christ there is no nationality: color creed and race ceases, we are all one in the body of Christ.
Galatians 3:27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

3. What happened when the apostles disagreed with the Pharisees who insisted that the Gentile converts should be circumcised?   Acts 15:5, 6
When fundamental doctrine came into question, the church came together and deliberated over the matter.
Acts 15:5But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
Acts 15:6And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

4. What was the reply from the church leaders?   Acts 15:7-11, 9
After the church leaders deliberated over the contention of wither the gentile converts should be circumcised before being accepted into the body of Christ. Peter stood with conviction and truth stating that YHWH had anointed the gentiles through his preaching of the word, empowering them with the Holy Ghost being without circumcision. Peter contended if YHWH who judges the heart gave the gentiles of His Spirit, why should they put a yoke of bondage upon them, which they nor their fathers could have kept.

Acts 15:7And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
Acts 15:8And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
Acts 15:9And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
Acts 15:10Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
Acts 15:11But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

5. What is the law passed on to the Gentiles?   Acts 15:19,20
The decision was past that the Jews would not trouble the gentiles nor burden them to be circumcised.
Acts 15:19Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
Acts 15:20But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Answer: That bold statement is, "trouble them not" with circumcision and sacrifices. Acts 15 is clear concerning the laws that pertain to the New Testament church. There is no mention of the feasts in this chapter. The Church of God does not keep the feasts or circumcision.

6. According to the teachings of our Saviour, what "sacrificial law" are we supposed to be remembering?   John 6:54; Hebrews 10: 1-3; Mark 14:22-24
Christ has become our past over delivering us from the wages of sin. We are to partake of His body and blood until He returns in glory to reward His brethren with immortality.
John 6:54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Hebrews 10:1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
Hebrews 10:2For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
Hebrews 10:3But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
Mark 14:22And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
Mark 14:23And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
Mark 14:24And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

7. What is our destiny if we mix our Lord's teachings and the traditions of the Jews?   Matthew 9:16,17
We are doomed to destruction if we mix the tradition of the Jews with the teachings of Christ; Christ is our redeemer and His teachings has been established and upheld by the disciples.
Matthew 9:16No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
Matthew 9:17Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

8. Since there is no difference between the Jews and the Gentiles, should the Jews sacrifice and circumcise?   Galatians 3:28; Acts 15:9
The Jews no longer sacrifice, but circumcision which was a covenant between Abraham and YHWH was to be observed by Abraham’s seed for all eternity. All Jews must be circumcised but Christians are adopted through faith. “And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.” Gen 17:9, 10

Galatians 3:28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Acts 15:9And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Conclusion: Ceremonial worship, sacrificial worship, temples, and ordinances were well defined in the worship of the first covenant. Acts 15 (and other New Testament scriptures) leaves out the visible and physical. We are to worship God in spirit and in truth. John 4:23.

Conclusion: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8, 9.
