HOW TO AVOID SIN - PART II
| Scripture Reading: |
Romans 6 |
| Date: |
Review of last Sabbath's lesson |
| Memory Verse: |
| Romans 8:13 | For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. | | Romans 8:14 | For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. |
| Summary: |
Covet/Lust: an insatiable desire to have that which is forbidden or beyond our means.
| Introduction: |
Sin is not something that we stumble into. Laws and instructions must be ignored, and the sin must be conceived and allowed. This lesson reviews three examples of people who did not try to avoid sin.   |
| 1. |
What strict command did Joshua give the children of Israel before they fought the city of Jericho?   Joshua 6:18, 19 |
Joshua charged the children of Israel not to take anything from within the cursed city into their possession. The only things which were to be taken out of the cursed city were the precious metals and vessels of brass and silver: these were consecrated unto the LORD and were to be placed into the treasury. |
| Joshua 6:18 | And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. | | Joshua 6:19 | But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD. |
| 2. |
What was the consequences for disobeying the above instruction?   Joshua 7:1-5 |
One person disobeyed the LORD and the entire camp/nation paid the consequence. Israel the mighty nation whom YHWH worked mighty miracles for crumbled before the children of Ai, they were made to flee because they angered the LORD through their disobedience, they themselves became accursed. |
| Joshua 7:1 | But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. | | Joshua 7:2 | And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai. | | Joshua 7:3 | And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few. | | Joshua 7:4 | So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai. | | Joshua 7:5 | And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. |
| 3. |
What did Joshua and the elders of Israel do because of the above failure?   Joshua 7:6-9 |
Joshua and the elders of Israel mourned before the LORD, they beseeched the LORD of the reason for their humiliation. |
| Joshua 7:6 | And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. | | Joshua 7:7 | And Joshua said, Alas, O LORD God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan! | | Joshua 7:8 | O LORD, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies! | | Joshua 7:9 | For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name? |
| 4. |
What was the Lord's answer to Joshua?   Joshua 7:10-15 |
May YHWH have mercy on us. The LORD told Joshua Israel hath sinned. One man caused the LORD to pronounced judgment upon an entire nation, are we so ignorant or arrogant to believe YHWH will condone sin in our midst today? YHWH told Joshua to cause the people to sanctify themselves and put the accursed from amongst them. |
| Joshua 7:10 | And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? | | Joshua 7:11 | Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. | | Joshua 7:12 | Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you. | | Joshua 7:13 | Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you. | | Joshua 7:14 | In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man. | | Joshua 7:15 | And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel. |
| 5. |
In the selection process, who was taken?   Joshua 7:16-20 |
After the elimination process, Achan of the tribe of Judah was found to be the culprit, who caused the LORD to be angered against Israel. |
| Joshua 7:16 | So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken: | | Joshua 7:17 | And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken: | | Joshua 7:18 | And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. | | Joshua 7:19 | And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me. | | Joshua 7:20 | And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: |
| 6. |
In Achan's confession, what is his first statement to Joshua?   Joshua 7:21 |
Achan confessed that he coveted the Babylonian garment and treasures: he saw, he lusted then he disobeyed. Note verse 11 says Achan stole, the treasures were to be consecrated unto the LORD, when we deprive the LORD of what is rightly his we become thieves.
| Joshua 7:21 | When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. |
| Note: |
I saw, "I coveted," "and took." Many possessions and activities in this life are coveted only after seeing them. They are taken after giving in to coveting.   |
| 7. |
As humans living in this physical world, what do we battle daily in our struggle to live a sanctified life?   I John 2:15-17; Galatians 5:17 |
The flesh wrestles against the Spirit, they are contrary one to another. |
| I John 2:15 | Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. | | I John 2:16 | For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. | | I John 2:17 | And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. | | Galatians 5:17 | For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. |
| 8. |
What simple instruction did God give to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden?   Genesis 3:1-3 |
YHWH commanded Adam and Eve not to eat nor touch the tree which was in the midst of the garden, He told them the consequences of their disobedience would be death.
| Genesis 3:1 | Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? | | Genesis 3:2 | And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: | | Genesis 3:3 | But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. |
| 9. |
What led Eve to eat of the forbidden tree?   Genesis 3:6 |
Eve lusted and coveted that which was forbidden, her desire got us all into trouble. Sin has far reaching implications, our loved ones are affected by our indiscretions. It is time we become sober and save the next generation.
| Genesis 3:6 | And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. |
| Note: |
the woman saw. . . it was pleasant, "desired," and "took." Keeping company with "snakes" leads to sin.   |
| 10. |
When the Lord was ready to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, what did His angels do with Lot and his family?   Genesis 19:15, 16 |
We are prone to linger when it comes to dealing with sin, rather than taking immediate decisive action, we procrastinate. Lot was no different, the angels of the LORD because of His mercies had to take them out of the city with haste. |
| Genesis 19:15 | And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. | | Genesis 19:16 | And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. |
| 11. |
What special warning did He give them?   Genesis 19:17 |
Look not behind thee lest thou be consumed. You would think that would be sufficient warning, but human has this inherent nature which causes us to be disobedient.
| Genesis 19:17 | And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. |
| 12. |
What happened to Lot's wife who failed to take heed to the Lord's warning?   Genesis 19:26 |
The soul that sin shall die and that goes for all of us, whether presumptuous or through ignorance we will die when we become disobedient to the word of YHWH. Lot's wife looked back and therefore became a pillar of salt unto this day.
| Genesis 19:26 | But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. |
| 13. |
What method can we use to avoid sin?   Romans 8:1, 5-6, 13-14 |
The only way to avoid sin is to be absolutely obedient to the word of YHWH. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psa 119:11. We must ask the LORD for His Spirit to dwell within us, it is only through submission to the guidance of the Holy Spirit we are able to avoid the pitfalls of life. "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live." |
| Romans 8:1 | There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. | | Romans 8:5 | For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. | | Romans 8:6 | For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. | | Romans 8:13 | For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. | | Romans 8:14 | For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. |
| Conclusion: |
An excellent way to avoid sin is to occupy our lives with spiritual activities. We should "walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." We all have to live in a sinful world. This does not mean that we have to immerse ourselves in this world. Minimizing our associations with un-spiritual people, and avoiding the worst of sinners completely, spending time with the brethren and the scriptures is how we walk after the spirit.   |

Brazil Congress 2009
It was a pleasure once more to attend the annual Brazilian Congress in 2009. There were a little over 1000 members attending from the different parts of Brazil and Argentina. Everyone danced, sung praises unto the LORD. There were 14 members added to the fold as blessings and the laying of hands were done. Most members travelled many hours by bus from other cities to come and worship. I thank God for this gathering. I truly was a blessing to be there to worship with our South American brethren.
